Academics live a fun filled life. We teach, we do research (some of us research teaching for a great two-in-one deal), and we do service. This tripartite division of the work sphere works even better when all parts synergistically co-exist. Over the years, I have been fortunate to find some great avenues to serve. Some of my current activity include:

PsiChiSealPast-VICE PRESIDENT Midwest Region Psi Chi – The International Honor Society in Psychology

This is perfect for a student-centered teacher (and the psych nerd that I am).   Psi Chi’s mission is to recognize and promote excellence in psychological science. It has over $340,000.00 in grants for its members every year and helps students and faculty members with research and travel grants. A great organization.

BOARD MEMBER: Committee on Associate and Baccalaureate Education (CABE)

CABE’s mission is to represent psychology faculty teaching at undergraduate institutions, promote within all undergraduate institutions the highest professional standards for teaching of psychology as a scientific discipline,…and encourage scholarship on teaching and learning at all undergraduate institutions for the purpose of giving students the best possible educational opportunities.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS: American Foundation of Counseling Servicesimgres

The American Foundation of Counseling Services provides counseling for individuals and families, foster care programs, and organizational development services. Given the connection between greater well-being, stronger families, ethical business environments and healthy communities, AFCS sponsors the Ethics in Business Awards and highlights positive models of ethical behavior – those who champion the universal ethical principles.  Mental health is a significant problem and although not a clinical or counseling psychologist, but training in psychology makes this a wonderful venue to serve.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Live54218

Live54218’s mission is to create environments in the community that support and promote all residents daily in consuming 5 fruits and vegetables, drinking 4 bottles of water, having less than 2 hours of screen time, participating in at least 1 hour of physical activity, and sleeping 8 hours a night.  Our shared vision is to make the Greater Green Bay Area the healthiest community in the nation. The group organizes a farm to school program, coordinates activities to energize kids and adults, and has resources to optimize health. Perfect for a health psychologist like me. I love the applied nature of the work and the opportunity to use my expertise for change.
